Dr. E. Glenn Hinson Annual Lecture

Statement of Purpose: 
The E. Glenn Hinson Lecture Series honors the life and work of Dr. E. Glenn Hinson. The series, established in 2009 in honor of his 50th year of teaching, will explore formational, foundational, and/or future issues in the areas of his passion: spiritual formation/spirituality, church history, ecumenism, and Baptist history.

 

4th Annual E. Glenn Hinson Lecture Series

 The 4th annual E. Glenn Hinson Lectures will be held on Monday, March 5, 2012, at the Conference Center on the Georgetown College Campus in Georgetown, KY.

 

Don E. Saliers is the Wm. R. Cannon Professor of Theology and Worship, Emeritus, at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, and is adjunct professor at St. John’s University School of Theology, Collegeville, Minnesota. A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, Yale Divinity School, with doctoral work at Cambridge and Yale Universities, served as President of the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality, and the North American Academy of Liturgy, from whom he received the Berakah Award.

 

For many years he directed the Sacred Music Program at Emory, and has been organist/choirmaster at Cannon Chapel for over 30 years.

 

Don served United Methodist churches in rural Ohio and the inner city of New Haven, Connecticut.  He leads retreats and lectures widely across the United States on matters of worship, spirituality, and music, and has been involved in the development of United Methodist worship resources for forty years. 

 

Program:  "A Sound Spirituality:  Hymns, Psalms and Spiritual Songs"

Lecture I:  "Psalms As Sung Prayer"    [exploring the necessity of both doxology and lament in spiritual formation--with concrete examples from the history of Christian worship and devotion]
Lecture II:  "Music and the Religious Affections"  [exploring how hymns as well as non-verbal music shapes and expression human emotion before God]
Short Presentation:  "A New Song to the Lord: Recent work by Women Hymn Writers"
